Zenitco's Basis rail was designed to do one thing Picatinny rails can't: give shooters a mounting standard that is lighter and slimmer, without giving up reliability. Basis is now the backbone of the "Sport" and "Leader" handguard families, and after more than seven years on the market the accessory ecosystem around it has grown considerably. This guide rounds up what Basis actually is, how the reinforced version differs, and every accessory currently compatible with it, as of mid-2026.
What Is the Basis Rail, and Why Is It Reliable?
Picatinny and Weaver rails are the most familiar mounting standards, but they're relatively bulky and heavy. Basis was developed as a lighter, slimmer alternative that still lets you attach brackets with Picatinny rail sections, grips, foregrip stops, sling loops, cable clips, bipods, remote pressure pads, and red dot riser platforms.
Structurally, Basis is a rail with a run of round and oval holes, bounded on both ends. That boundary is what makes it dependable: it prevents anything mounted on it from rotating. The only motion left to control is sliding along the rail's length, which is handled by a screw or a cam lever. Together, this guarantees an accessory returns to the exact same position every time it's remounted — something a standard that doesn't eliminate rotation can't promise.
Reinforced Basis: When You Need the "S" Version
For harder use, Zenitco built a reinforced variant of Basis that adds steel inserts at every mounting point, so accessories on it must be attached with a screw rather than a cam lever. Reinforced Basis is only used on the underside of a handguard, and it exists mainly for one scenario: mounting long forward grips (RK-1L or RK-2L) that create significant leverage under hard, sustained use. For ordinary shooting conditions, standard Basis is more than sufficient.
Product names with the reinforced rail carry an "S" (for "strong") in the model name — for example, the "Leader" kit versus the reinforced "Leader-S". Kits with reinforced Basis weigh a little more than the standard version, but they're still lighter than an equivalent all-Picatinny build.
Which Handguards and Kits Use Basis
As of summer 2026, Zenitco's Basis rail appears across the following handguard lines:
- AK (74, 100, and 200 series) and carbines built on it: B-10U, B-10L, B-10LS, B-30U, and the "Sport-1", "Sport-1S", "Sport-4", "Sport-4S", "Leader", and "Leader-S" kits
- AK-12 and carbines built on it: "Sport-12" and "Sport-12U" kits
- AKS-74U and carbines built on it: B-11U
- Vityaz-SN submachine gun and carbines built on it: B-21U, B-21L, and the "Sport-2" and "Sport-3" kits
- RPK and carbines built on it: B-20U, B-20L, and the "Sport-5" and "Sport-5U" kits
- Saiga-308: B-23L, and the "Sport-8" and "Sport-8U" kits
- Vepr-12 (VPO-205): the "Sport-6" kit
- AR-15 and carbines built on it: the "Joker" handguard series
Accessories Compatible With Basis
Zenitco keeps expanding the Basis accessory catalog. Here's what's currently available, grouped by function.
- Picatinny-forming brackets: the B-2 family creates a short Picatinny section wherever you need one on the rail — B-2M (1.5 cm), B-2L (3.5 cm), B-2 (4.5 cm), B-2U (7.5 cm), and B-2 Leader, which doubles as a cleaning-rod boss cover and ships as part of the "Leader" kit
- Forward-offset bracket: B-9L is the Basis version of the B-9 ("Goose") offset mount, and includes a height spacer for clearing obstructions
- Foregrips and stops: the RK-series grips range from the 12.5 cm RK-2L down to the 6 cm angled RK-6L, plus the RL-1 grip stop; an RK-L adapter adds a second mounting point for the longer grips (RK-1L and RK-2L) to spread out the load under hard use
- Bipods: the "Zhuk-1" bipod ships as two independent legs that mount to the side rails (a "Basis adapter" lets you mount them underneath in the traditional style instead); folding is a quarter-turn twist-and-pull
- Covers and cable management: the NPN-2 rubber rail cover (10 cm) and the FP-3 cable clip, which locks a wire in place with a quarter turn in an oval hole
- Remote pressure pad mounts: any button in the "KV-D..." family mounts directly to Basis
- Sling loops: A-1L (classic loop shape), A-2L (a minimalist design built for Basis from the start), and A-3 (shared with the PT-1 stock, sold with either a plain screw or a cam-lever screw)
- Quick-detach sling mounts: A-4 forms a socket for quick-detach sling swivels, for slings like the "Poloz" series
- Red dot riser: the PV-B45U platform mounts with two cam levers and creates a 45-degree offset mounting point for the "Vzor-1", "Vzor-3", "Vzor-3T", and "Vzor-3TK" red dots — it ships standard with the base-configuration Vzor-1
- Adapters: a Basis-to-Picatinny adapter lets you create a Basis rail section on top of an existing Picatinny rail
- Combined aiming devices: the "Perst Leader" (a 4-in-1 visible light, IR illuminator, IR laser, and visible laser unit) mounts into the dedicated Basis slot on the "Leader", "Leader-S", "Sport-2" V2.0, and "Sport-12U" kits, using four screws rather than the standard Basis fixation method
Mounting Accessories on Basis
Standard Basis accepts accessories two ways. A cam lever seats in one of the rail's oval holes and is tightened with a screwdriver from the back until it rotates a full 90 degrees — handy because it doesn't require removing the handguard from the rifle. Alternatively, accessories can be bolted through an M5x9 screw at a bracket junction (note this is longer than the M5x7 screws used to attach the handguard itself, since you're now stacking an accessory on top). Reinforced Basis only accepts the screw method, threading directly into the rail's steel inserts. Both the cam levers and the mounting screws ship with the accessory kits themselves.
All the products in this guide are designed and manufactured by Zenitco in Russia. Bazalet carries the current Basis-compatible lineup as an authorized Zenitco dealer — reach out if you need help matching accessories to your specific handguard or kit.
