Overview
The KeyMod standard let AFR do something the other bases cannot: because the swivel cylinder passes straight through into the slot, the base itself only has to be 4 mm thick. That is about as close to flush as a QD point gets, and it keeps the sling attachment from catching on kit or on a barricade. Total weight is around 10 g.
The second design decision is the mounting. There are no T-nuts to align and lose - two screws thread upward from the inside face of the handguard, which also means nothing can back out into the slot. Materially it is the same recipe as the rest of the AFR family: structural steel, heat treated, surface hardened by carbonitriding, so a steel swivel does not wear the socket oval. The inner cup carries the same anti-rotation recesses that stop the swivel turning on its axis.
