PT-1 vs PT-5: Compatibility and Differences for AK-Based Rifles

PT-1 and PT-5 Stock Compatibility Overview

On the AKM, AK-74, as well as civilian carbines based on them, the standard stock is a fixed (non-folding) stock (“paddle” type). If you want to replace it with an adjustable telescopic stock, the available solution depends on the weapon model.

The options are either:

• PT-1 stock with the Â“Non-folding AKM” adapter lock (shown in the top photo), or
• PT-5 stock (shown in the bottom photo).

In this configuration:
PT-1 is non-folding
PT-5 is folding

Compatibility

• For civilian carbines, only the PT-1 with the “Non-folding AKM” adapter may be used. The folding PT-5 must not be used.
• For AK-74 and AKM, both the folding PT-5 and the PT-1 with the “Non-folding AKM” adapter can be used.

What do the PT-1 and PT-5 stocks have in common?

The PT-5 is based on the PT-1 design, so most of their functionality is identical, except for the mounting system.

Both stocks:

• are skeleton-type stocks
• are telescopic (length adjustment range: 10 cm)
• have an adjustable cheek rest
• have an adjustable butt pad
• come with two butt pads: one wide and one narrow

What are the differences between the stocks?

The main difference is the mounting system.

PT-1

• Uses interchangeable adapter locks
• When ordering a PT-1, you choose one adapter lock:
  • AK / Vityaz
  • AKS-74U
  • Civilian AK models
  • Saiga-9
  • Ten
  • Non-folding AKM
• Additional adapter locks can be purchased separately for future reinstallation
• The “Non-folding AKM” adapter is compatible with AKM, AK-74, and carbines based on them
• With this adapter, the stock is non-folding

PT-5

• Has a built-in folding mount
• Does not use separate adapter locks
• The folding mechanism is an integral part of the stock
• Allows the stock to fold on AKM and AK-74
• Cannot be installed on other weapon types
• Not compatible with AK-74M

Summary

• For civilian carbines, use the PT-1 with the “Non-folding AKM” adapter.
• For AKM and AK-74, the PT-5 is the default option.
• If future reinstallation on other compatible weapons is planned, choose PT-1 with the “Non-folding AKM” adapter and purchase additional adapter locks separately.
