How Accessories Affect the Weight of Your AK-Pattern Sport Carbine

One of the first questions builders ask when planning an upgrade is simple: how much heavier will my carbine get? To answer that, we worked with verified measurements taken on an AK-pattern sport carbine with a full-length barrel — a platform whose stock weight closely matches the AK-74M base. All measurements were taken without a magazine.

The Baseline: Stock Configuration

Right out of the box, the sport carbine with all factory-fitted components weighs 3 kg 435 g. An easy number to remember: roughly three and a half kilograms. Every weight figure below is measured from this same starting point.

Adding an Optics Mount: Your Options

The most common first upgrade is creating a Picatinny rail above the receiver so a red-dot or other optic can be mounted. There are two main ways to achieve this.

Option 1 — Side Mount B-13

The quickest and most budget-friendly solution is the B-13 side mount, which attaches to the dovetail rail and projects a Picatinny rail over the receiver. With the B-13 fitted, the carbine weighs 3 kg 608 g — an increase of 173 g over stock.

Option 2 — Receiver Cover B-33 + Handguard

The more versatile solution is the B-33 receiver cover, which delivers an excellent return-to-zero Picatinny rail above the receiver. Installing the B-33 also requires replacing the factory handguard, since the handguard serves as the mounting base. Compatible handguards are machined from aviation-grade aluminum and are press-fitted into the receiver with a mallet — creating an extremely rigid platform for further accessories.

In this test, the B-10L handguard was used — the lightest option in the lineup, actually 19 g lighter than the factory handguard. After swapping to the B-10L, the carbine weighs 3 kg 358 g — lighter than stock. Adding a B-2L Picatinny adapter bracket to one of the B-10L's three-sided Basis rails brings the total to 3 kg 368 g, still under the factory weight.

With the B-33 receiver cover installed on top of the B-10L handguard, the total carbine weight is 3 kg 446 g — just 11 g more than the factory configuration, while gaining a solid Picatinny rail over the receiver and a rigidly seated handguard ready for accessories.

Building Further: Stock and Gas-Tube Bracket

Adding the PT-1 adjustable folding stock — which features telescoping length-of-pull, an adjustable cheek riser, an adjustable buttpad, and dual sling-swivel positions — brings the total to 3 kg 509 g.

Next, fitting the B-19N gas-tube bracket (which adds a low-profile Picatinny rail above the gas tube) brings the running total to 3 kg 548 g. For reference, the B-19 offers a full-height top Picatinny rail, while the B-19N is the lower-profile variant.

The Key Takeaway: Weight vs. Functionality

Here is the most interesting finding from these measurements: a carbine fitted with a new handguard, a gas-tube bracket, a folding adjustable stock, and a rear grip weighs the same as a carbine fitted with only the B-13 side mount.

Neither approach is objectively better — it comes down to budget and goals. The B-13 side mount is the faster, lower-cost path to optics mounting. But if your budget allows, a full handguard-and-cover setup delivers significantly more functionality — more rail space, a rigid handguard, a fully adjustable stock — for the same total weight.
