AKS-74U Sport Carbine Upgrades: Builds and Their Weight

The AKS-74U platform ships with no rails on the handguard or above the receiver. For modern sporting use demands — mounting optics, lights, or laser units — that stock configuration simply isn't enough. Below you'll find practical upgrade paths, all based on verified Zenitco manufacturer data, complete with real weight figures for each build.

Why Upgrade the Stock Configuration?

Out of the box, the AKS-74U platform offers no mounting points for optics or accessories on the handguard or receiver cover. For competitive sporting use and IPSC/PCC use, you need proper mounting surfaces for sighting devices, as well as improved ergonomics. The two main goals are: adding a Picatinny rail above the receiver for optics, and replacing the handguard with one that has accessory rails.

Mounting Optics: B-18 vs. B-33AKSU

There are two primary solutions for placing a collimator or optic above the receiver, and they are mutually exclusive — you install one or the other, not both.

Option 1 — B-18 Rear Sight Bracket

The B-18 mounts above the rear sight and creates a Picatinny rail in that position. It is the more affordable and easier-to-install option. Iron sights remain visible through the gap beneath the bracket. However, if you ever need to add a thermal imaging device, the B-18 rail length will be insufficient for that purpose.

Option 2 — B-33AKSU Receiver Cover

The B-33AKSU replaces the stock receiver cover and the recoil mechanism (a lighter unit is included in the kit). It creates a longer Picatinny rail above the receiver, suitable not only for collimators but also for thermal or optical sights. Iron sights remain usable with this solution as well.

Weight Note: Despite their size difference, the overall build weight with B-18 and with B-33AKSU is approximately equal. The B-33AKSU build is actually slightly lighter, because the stock receiver cover is removed and replaced by the included recoil mechanism, which is marginally lighter than the stock one. The mass of the B-18 is roughly equal to the weight difference between the B-33AKSU assembly and the stock cover.

Recommended Builds with Verified Weights

The table below lists confirmed build weights sourced directly from Zenitco manufacturer data.

Build ConfigurationTotal Weight
AKS-74U platform + B-182 kg 541 g
AKS-74U + B-18 + Vzor-3 collimator2 kg 685 g
AKS-74U platform + B-33AKSU2 kg 535 g
AKS-74U + B-33AKSU + Vzor-1 collimator on medium riser2 kg 695 g

Budget Build: B-18 + Vzor-3

If you need a straightforward, reliable collimator while keeping iron sights accessible, pair the B-18 with the Vzor-3. The Vzor-3 series is the most affordable and lightest collimator in the Zenitco lineup, offering three reticle options: dot, circle, and circle+dot. If you want to save an additional 7 grams and reduce cost further, choose the Vzor-3T (dot only) or Vzor-3TK (dot+circle only) — single fixed reticle variants with no switching.

Extended Rail Build: B-33AKSU + Vzor-1

For a longer rail that supports larger optics, pair the B-33AKSU receiver cover with the Vzor-1 collimator on a medium riser. The Vzor-1 offers the widest feature set among Zenitco collimators while remaining relatively lightweight. It has three reticle options — dot, circle, circle+dot — and allows independent brightness adjustment for the circle and the dot separately.

Handguard Upgrade: B-11 and B-11U

The stock handguard has no rails for mounting lights or laser units. For sport use where accessory placement must hold zero, the mounting rigidity of the handguard is critical. The B-11 and B-11U handguards are CNC-machined from aerospace-grade hardened aluminum and are driven into the receiver with a mallet — this method ensures a solid, play-free fit so that any mounted accessory retains its point of aim.

An added benefit of the aluminum construction: the handguard acts as a heat sink, improving heat management during extended use.

B-11 vs. B-11U

The B-11 is the standard version with full Picatinny rails on all sides. The B-11U is the lightweight version — it features Basis-system side rails and a Picatinny rail on the bottom. The Basis system allows you to form a Picatinny section at any position you need, and also accepts Basis-compatible accessories such as sling mounts, buttons, and stops. The builds featured throughout this guide use the lighter B-11U variant.

Quick Tip: The B-18 and B-33AKSU solutions are mutually exclusive — choose one for your build. Pair either with a B-11U handguard to add side and bottom mounting points for your sporting use accessories.
