In short: the Transformer Poncho XL is one piece of kit that works as four - a rain poncho, an insulated jacket, a sleeping bag and a pitched tarp - in the larger of Expert-Tex's two transformer cuts.

Overview

Camp kit multiplies fast, and most of it spends the trip in the pack. This is the opposite: a single insulated shell that changes role. Worn open it is a poncho over your pack; closed it wears as a jacket; zipped along the edges it becomes a sleeping bag 220 x 80 cm; and staked out with cord it pitches as a tarp over a sleeping spot, which is what the second photo shows.

The outer is CatsEye with a TPU 10000/1000 membrane, the lining is ripstop Taffeta 210T with its own TPU 1000/1000 layer, and between them sits one 120 g per square metre layer of Thinsulate - enough for comfort between +10 C and +15 C, with an extreme of 0 C. It opens flat to 220 x 160 cm, packs to 47 x 17 x 17 cm and weighs 1530 g, 1580 g with the sack. The poncho is one size.
